FOR BEGINNERS / SCHOOL BAND BRASS STUDENTS & PARENTS:
It's even more important for younger students to have slides, valves, and rotors move smoothly and no leaky water keys (spit valves) so they can actually play their instrument and not become districted from equipment that is not functioning properly. This can lead to discouragement or frustration and a student may even want to quit beginning band not realizing it's an adjustment with the instrument. If you see those signs happening with your student it won't hurt to stop by for a free play condition evaluation. I've seen many things with beginning band students equipment problems over the last 26+ years of private teaching and fixing instruments and they all can cause unneeded stress for students. It's free to bring in your instrument for a diagnosis many times it's a very easy and super low cost adjustment. HELP! I've stuck my mouthpiece! Don't cause expensive damage (I've seen cases where a student or parent use tools that are not designed for pulling mouthpieces and cause catastrophic damage to an instrument resulting in very expensive repairs or replacement, just don't do it!! Most of the time there is very minimal cost getting a mouthpiece unstuck and you just saved yourself from ripping apart your instrument (yep, I've seen some nasty things over the years with solder points broken and mouthpiece and or leadpipe mangled, either repairable or buy another horn in that case)
